A fixed-coupon note built to exit fast: it pays a set coupon whether or not the shares rise, starts checking for an early redemption the day after issue, and can pay a multiplied first coupon if it redeems in month one — in exchange you carry the downside of the weakest share in the basket.

In One Sentence
A Fixed Coupon Note (FCN) has three moving parts: a basket of underlying stocks measured on a worst-of basis, a fixed coupon paid every period whether the shares rise or fall, and a put strike that decides — only at maturity — whether your capital comes back in full. The "Express" variant adds a twist to the exit: the early-redemption ("knock-out") check begins the day after issue and runs daily, rather than waiting months — and a first-period rebate multiplier can pay 1×, 1.5× or 2× the first coupon if the note knocks out inside month one. It is designed to get you in and out quickly with a small bonus, not to be held for years.
The Core Trade-Off
There is no free yield. The fixed coupon and the first-month bonus are the price of the risks you take on — chiefly the downside of the weakest share and the credit of the issuing bank. The coupons are often fattest precisely when the underlyings are most volatile. Seeing both sides clearly is the whole point.
How It Works
You invest at the start, sometimes at a small discount to par. The closing prices of the underlying shares on the strike date become their fixed reference levels for the whole life of the note.
From the day after issue, the bank checks the worst-performing stock every day against a fixed knock-out barrier (e.g. 95% of start). This early, daily check is what makes it "Express".
If the worst stock is at or above the barrier on any day, the note ends early. Knock out in month one and you receive the whole first coupon × the multiplier (e.g. 2×); knock out later and you receive capital plus accrued coupon. The intended fast, bonus exit.
Coupons are paid each period throughout. If the note is never knocked out, the return of your capital depends entirely on where the worst stock finishes versus its put strike — see the zones below.
A standard FCN usually only starts checking for a knock-out after the first month or quarter, and often only on set observation dates. The Express variant does two things differently: the knock-out window opens the day after issue, and it is observed every day. Two flavours exist — a "memory" knock-out (each underlying must have closed at or above its barrier at least once) and a plain daily knock-out (the worst underlying on the day). The practical effect is the same: an early exit becomes much more likely, and can happen almost immediately after you invest.
The first-period rebate multiplier is the sweetener attached to this fast exit: if the note knocks out inside month one, you are paid the whole first-period coupon (not just the few days accrued) multiplied by 1×, 1.5× or 2×. It is a real but small bonus in absolute terms — a doubled month-one coupon is a modest figure next to the size of a worst-of drawdown, so it should never be the reason to take the risk.
The "Fixed" in FCN refers to the coupon, not your capital. The coupon is paid each period no matter what the shares do — that part is genuinely fixed. But your principal is fully at risk: if the note is never knocked out and the worst stock finishes below its put strike at maturity, you take a loss proportional to that stock's decline, usually delivered as physical shares. A high fixed coupon does not narrow that downside — if anything, a fat coupon is a signal that the underlyings are volatile and the downside is larger.
If the note runs to maturity without ever knocking out, you will have collected the coupons along the way, and the return of capital depends only on where the worst stock finishes versus its put strike.
worst stock ≥ put strikeWorst stock at/above the put strike → full capital back, and you keep every coupon paid.
a fine lineThe coupons you banked may not offset the capital shortfall once the worst stock is below the strike — income earned, capital dented.
worst stock < put strikeWorst stock below the put strike → you receive shares of it, worth materially less than you invested.
Put-strike levels are set per issue. Because you sit on the worst of the basket, the loss is driven by whichever single name falls furthest.
Set-up (invented): a 6-month Express FCN on three hypothetical high-volatility technology shares — Stock A, B, C — worst-of, fixed coupon 15% p.a. (≈1.25%/month), daily knock-out barrier at 95% of start beginning the day after issue, put strike at 65% of start, first-month rebate multiplier 2×.
📈 Scenario A — fast knock-out with bonus: a week after issue the worst of the three rebounds above 95% → the note knocks out immediately. You receive 100% of capital plus the whole first-month coupon doubled (≈2.5%). A quick, tidy result — but the money is now back in your hands and must be reinvested, perhaps on worse terms.
📊 Scenario B — knocks out mid-life: no early call in month one; at month four the worst stock closes above 95% → the note ends, you receive capital plus the coupons accrued to that point (≈5%). No multiplier (it only applies to month one).
📉 Scenario C — never knocks out, capital loss: markets fall and stay down; the note is never called; at maturity the worst stock sits at ~45% of its start (below the 65% put strike). You have collected six months of coupons (≈7.5%) but are delivered shares of the worst stock worth ~45% — a net capital loss far larger than the coupons earned. This is the outcome that matters most.
The Number That Matters Most
Because the coupon is fixed, the question is never "will I be paid?" — it is "how much can the worst stock fall before my capital is at risk?" That gap — how far the worst-performing share sits above the put strike — is your cushion, and it is the one figure we track for every live position. (A second number governs the timing: how close the worst stock is to the knock-out barrier tells you how soon an early exit — and the reinvestment decision — is likely.)
Because the note settles on the worst name, the basket is only as strong as its weakest link — two strong stocks cannot rescue one that breaks down. On an Express structure the underlyings are frequently the market's most volatile names, so a comfortable buffer can thin quickly.
Key Risks
Given equal weight to the rewards above — because that is how risk should be read.
Your capital outcome is set by the weakest stock. Two names rising strongly cannot offset one that falls far, and Express baskets are typically built from the most volatile shares — the source of the rich coupon and of the large potential loss.
The coupon is fixed; your principal is not. If the note never knocks out and the worst stock ends below the put strike, the capital loss can dwarf the coupons collected. Never read a high coupon as a measure of safety — it is the opposite.
The structure is designed to redeem you quickly. A fast knock-out returns your capital in days or weeks, so the income stream is short and you must redeploy the proceeds — often into a lower-coupon environment. The small first-month bonus rarely compensates for a repeated cycle of reinvesting.
In the loss scenario you are delivered the worst stock itself. If it keeps falling after delivery, you bear further losses as a shareholder.
A note is an unsecured obligation of the issuing bank. If the issuer fails, you may lose your capital even if the stocks performed well. It is not a bank deposit and is not covered by any compensation scheme.
Notes are typically not exchange-listed. Exiting early relies on the issuer's best-efforts quote, with a wide spread; in stressed markets liquidity may disappear.
No dividends accrue to you and your total return cannot exceed the coupons. The issuing bank often acts as both dealer and calculation agent, making the final determinations on barriers, prices and settlement.
The Touchstone Difference
Most providers hand you a term sheet and move on. We treat a structured note as a live position to be managed, not a product to be sold. Every note you hold is tracked continuously — the worst-of level against the put strike (your buffer) and against the knock-out barrier (your early-exit clock), the coupons due, and the days to the next observation. Because an Express note can call almost immediately, we prepare the reinvestment conversation before it happens. As the picture changes, we bring it to you early, in plain language.
The rebate multiplier only applies inside month one. We watch the daily knock-out through that first window closely, because that is where the note's small bonus is won or missed.
Corporate actions — stock splits, special dividends — can distort a naive price comparison. We adjust the reference levels so the worst-of reading against barrier and strike is always true.
